You’ve just read about getting on and off limited access highways. Consider these guidelines for travel when you are on limited access highways:
- Use the right travel lanes for driving and the left for passing. If you are in a left lane and someone pulls up behind you at a faster rate of speed, move right and let them proceed.
- If in the far right lane, always be aware of vehicles entering the flow of traffic.
- Never cross over the median or park there.
- If your vehicle becomes disabled, move it completely off the road. Do not leave it on any part of the pavement, shoulder, or connecting ramp (unless your situation is an emergency).
- Be aware that you cannot leave a vehicle abandoned on a restricted access highway for more than six hours.
- Always increase your following distance on these higher speed roadways.
- Never back up on an entrance or exit ramp unless you see red reflectors indicating you are going the wrong way.
- Don’t forget the “Move Over” law. You will read about the details very soon.
